WHAT IS HYDROPONICS?

Hydroponics means working water ("hydro" means water & "ponos" means labor).  It is not new science or a new agricultural concept. Many different civilizations have utilized hydroponic growing techniques throughout history.  The hanging gardens of Babylon, the floating gardens of the Aztecs of Mexico and those of the Chinese are all examples of "Hydroponic Culture".  Egyptian hieroglyphic records dating back several hundred years B.C. describe the growing of plants in water. Hydroponics is hardly a new method of growing plants!
 
Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrients dissolved in water.  When the required mineral nutrients are introduced into a plant's water supply, soil is no longer required for the plant to thrive.  Hydroponic grow systems save land, save water, eliminates agricultural runoff and the use of chemical pesticides & herbicides.
 
 
 
 

HOW DO WE GROW OUR LETTUCE?

Entirely indoors!  We grow our leafy greens on a hydroponic NFT small leaf grow rack, inside our revamped cinder block fruit warehouse, under halide lighting.  With this system the plants are set into covered troughs that water is circulated through.  This closed re-circulation system allows the plants roots to absorb what they need from a properly formulated nutrient solution, which then returns to the reservoir.  This nutrient solution is constantly monitored and adjusted to maintain the proper balance for optimum growth.
